ADHD Natural Treatment: Chiropractic Care

Several studies have shown a link between certain head injuries and the development of symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children. The results of these studies reveal that 20% of children who experience traumatic brain injury will exhibit chronic inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity within two years, even if they did not experience these symptoms before the injury.

The relationship between spinal trauma (often caused by traumatic birth) and ADHD is less known in conventional medicine.  Most people never think of it this way, but a properly functioning spine is needed for the brain to work optimally.  The spine and the postural muscles surrounding it are loaded with mechanical receptors that transform muscular information into neurological information that travels through the spinal cord to reach the brain. Because the spine and the postural muscles must constantly adapt to gravity, they are the brain’s primary and only constant source of stimulation.

This leads us to an important question: can treating the spine benefit children and adults with ADHD? We will get a response by exploring the field of chiropractic. Chiropractic care is a healing science based upon the premise that good health depends on a well-functioning nervous system. The brain controls everything, from our body to our mind. The main communication pathway between the brain and the rest of the body is the spinal cord. The brain and spinal cord are encased within the skull and spinal column. In order for the brain to communicate optimally with the rest of the body, the skull and the spine have to be functioning optimally. Any mechanical dysfunction (called vertebral subluxations by chiropractors) affecting the skull and spine will interfere with proper nerve communication in the nerves and the brain. This can give rise to emotional, behavioral, and cognitive problems.

Instead of using drugs and medications to cover symptoms, chiropractic care aims to normalize the structure of the body and adjust any parts that are functioning improperly.  This restores proper function in the nervous system and allows the body to heal. The methods used by chiropractic are varied, and include gentle spinal adjustment techniques and manual procedures, as well as lifestyle counseling.

Research supporting the use of chiropractic care in ADHD is growing. There are at least 20 documented reports that show how children and adults with ADHD have benefited from chiropractic adjustments. As early as 1989, one study showed how seven hyperactive children receiving chiropractic care had reduced hyperactivity and impulsivity.  In my own clinic, we did a pilot study on eight adults with ADHD inattentive type. After only two months of a specialized form of chiropractic care called Network Spinal Analysis, close to 90% of participants had normalized or greatly improved their attention.

Your child may benefit from a consultation with a chiropractor, whether or not he or she had a traumatic birth.  Traumatic births are not the only cause of vertebral subluxation, or misalignment of the vertebra of the spine.  Throughout childhood, a child experiences falls, sports injuries, and other stressful movements that may have a negative cumulative effect on the growing spine. Many of the spinal problems experienced by adults have their origins in childhood. Even biochemical stresses caused by a poor diet, toxin exposure, and lack of exercise can cause pain and dysfunction in the spine.  To increase the chances of successful chiropractic therapy, look for a chiropractor with any one of these specialties:

Chiropractor with special training in neurology and ADHD

A chiropractor specializing in neurology will help you with spinal structure and the neurological aspect of ADHD rehabilitation. Visit www.acnb.org for a list of chiropractors with this specialty.

Chiropractor with training in chiropractic pediatrics

Chiropractors trained in chiropractic pediatrics have a passion for working with children and will have most likely treated children with ADHD.  To find a doctor near you, visit the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association at www.icpa4kids.org.

Chiropractor specializing in upper cervical care

Chiropractors with this specialization pay close attention to the first two vertebra of the neck.  These vertebrae and the tissues surrounding them have the highest density of mechanical receptors, which means that they have the most impact on brain function.  To get referrals, contact the International Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association at 650-361-8908.

As always, no single one intervention will allow you to overcome ADHD naturally, and this is why you need a complete roadmap on how to get well. Check out the UnRitalin Solution to find a structured step-by-step roadmap.
